Fire Restrictions

August 6, 2025

Fire restrictions in Greenlee County have been reduced to "Non-Emergency Fire Restriction". Duncan Valley Rural Fire District is not issuing Open Burn Permits at this time.

April 8, 2025

In coordination with our local fire chiefs, Greenlee County Emergency Management, and

based on guidance and data from state and federal forest officials, the Duncan Valley Rural Fire District is

enacting Stage 2 Fire Restrictions effective immediately.

These restrictions are being implemented due to increasing fire danger, persistent dry conditions, and

greater potential for wildfire activity. The decision is part of a collaborative regional effort to reduce the

risk of wildfires and protect public safety, natural resources, and property.

Fire Restrictions Explained

Duncan Valley Rural Fire District follows the definitions of fire restrictions as outlined in the Greenlee County Fire Ordinance. Greenlee County uses a two-level fire restriction system: Non-Emergency and Emergency Fire Restrictions. These are local terms and differ from the Stage 1 and Stage 2 restrictions used by Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) and Federal land management agencies.

  • Non-Emergency Fire Restrictions typically limit open burning, including campfires outside of designated areas, and may restrict certain types of equipment use that could cause sparks. This is a proactive measure to reduce wildfire risk during periods of elevated fire danger.

  • Emergency Fire Restrictions are more severe. These generally include bans on all open flames, campfires, and outdoor smoking, along with potential closures of high-risk areas to public access. Emergency restrictions are issued when wildfire risk reaches critical levels and firefighting resources are strained.

For comparison, DFFM and Federal Land Managers use Stage 1 and Stage 2 restrictions:

  • Stage 1 Fire Restrictions: No campfires or charcoal in undesignated areas, no smoking outside of vehicles or buildings, and no welding or grinding outdoors without proper clearance and safety measures.

  • Stage 2 Fire Restrictions: Everything in Stage 1 applies, plus bans on all campfires—even in developed campgrounds—no welding, no use of chainsaws or other internal combustion engines between 9 AM and 8 PM, and often closures of specific high-risk areas.
